Description

Stars and Stripes documents Takashi Homma’s time in New York between December 26, 2001 and January 5, 2002, just months after the September 11 attacks. Moving through the city with his characteristically restrained and observational approach, Homma photographs a landscape still marked by the event—memorials, flowers, American flags, city streets, architecture, and fragments of everyday life.

Rather than documenting the attacks themselves, Homma focuses on their lingering presence within the ordinary rhythms of New York. Images of mourning and patriotism sit alongside seemingly incidental views of airplanes, buildings, and the street, creating a quiet portrait of a city navigating loss, identity, and a newly altered sense of normalcy. Published in 2002, Stars and Stripes remains a subtle and affecting document of New York at a distinct moment in its history.
